Why Women Should Dive into Nature:
I have mentioned it before, but physical and mental health benefits of outdoor activities is what I am all about. Even sitting here typing this blog is making me feel a little guilty that I am not outside playing in nature! However, I also love writing and doing this blog is bringing me joy! No matter your age, size, socioeconomic status, or athletic ability there is a world outside just waiting to be discovered.
In a fast-paced world surrounded by technology, it is important to find tranquility of the great outdoors. Engaging in outdoor activities not only helps your physical well-being but will also empower you by connecting you with nature and like-minded communities. Building a sense of empowerment and confidence through outdoor challenges has been life changing for me. I feel I can do anything after I climb a mountain, paddle a river or ski a new trail. I haven’t scaled any huge mountains or forged any trails, but I have turned to nature for solace many times.
Popular Outdoor Activities for Women:
Below I have listed some popular outdoor activities I have read about for women. These of course can apply to men also, but my focus is to inspire women to get outdoors. Maybe you have a goal to try new things, or want help getting motivated and you are looking for some help. My intent to share my love of the outdoors while share stories growing up in Alaska and talk about how the outdoors have helped me in life.
Hiking: Hiking caters to many fitness levels. Whether exploring local trails or embarking on more challenging hikes, women can enjoy the physical and mental benefits of being surrounded by nature. I have a whole blog post about hiking. Being from Alaska, I explored the most beautiful mountains in the world.
Trail Running: For those looking for a cardiovascular challenge, trail running offers an exhilarating outdoor experience. The varying terrain and scenery provide a dynamic workout for both body and mind. Always make sure to have good shoes for support.
Cycling: Because cycling is a low-impact outdoor activity, it is an activity all ages can enjoy. From leisurely rides in the neighborhood to more adventurous mountain biking, cycling provides an excellent way to explore the outdoors. I see more ski resorts changing things up to add mountain biking and chairlift rides for some extreme fun.
Yoga in Nature: Taking yoga outdoors adds some serenity to the practice. Yoga can be practiced in parks, on beaches, or in gardens. Finding balance (literally and figuratively) in natural surroundings is good for your mind and spirit.
Rock Climbing: Rock climbing outdoors is an activity that challenges both physical and mental strength. There are plenty of places to practice indoors before heading outside. I have tried rock climbing outside and it is harder than it looks!
Kayaking or Paddle boarding: Kayaking and paddle boarding provide a unique outdoor experience. Whether on a quiet lake or a flowing river, these activities offer a refreshing way to connect with nature. I have to say, my paddle board is one of my favorite treasures I own. I love going out and drinking coffee or a cold beer and enjoy the world around me.
Finding Your Trail:
Solo activities for introspection and personal growth such as hiking, fishing, cycling, bird watching are excellent choices, I think if you don’t have a passion for the outdoors (yet) just give different things a try!
Group activities that emphasize camaraderie might be a good fit for you! I played soccer until I couldn’t any longer. I loved being on a team and while I wasn’t the best player, I enjoyed myself. I have seen tons of organized leagues for all levels to join. Most are willing to let you try out a session before committing. I tried rugby ONCE, and when they drew blood from hand in the first hour, I decided it wasn’t for me! Give some groups a try, you may find a hidden skill that has been waiting to shine! Softball leagues are always looking for people so maybe give that a try. While it won’t get you into nature, it is a fun outdoor activity and will perhaps lead to more outdoor adventures with new friends.
Gear Up:
Whatever it is you decide to hike, climb, ski, paddle, hunt, fish etc, make sure to have good gear. I still get shocked when I see people skiing in jeans! Don’t endanger yourself because you weren’t educated on good gear. I am not talking about expensive, but rather smart choices. If an emergency ever happened, it could be the matter of life and death depending on your gear!
Swimming was part of the triathlons I did! Swimming with fish and turtles was good training!
Organized Events:
There are a ton of outdoor events organized for many different activities. Usually, they are for charity so why not join? You will be doing a good service to the community as well getting outdoors. Most of the races have different distances so pick one that is comfortable for you. While I prefer not to join the masses in group races, sometimes it is just a fun community event. In one state I lived in, there was an all women’s triathlon. I loved doing it! There were all shapes and sizes that participated. It was a great excuse to train and get outdoors!
I hope I have given you some ideas for an excuse to get outside. I love going on hikes, skis, paddles or bike rides with friends and families. It is always good for my heart and soul! If you have an activity youthink I should tyr, let it in the comments below!
